Board Meeting

The Board Meeting began with a beautiful performance by the West High School choir. This group was recently invited to be a featured choir for a once-in-a-lifetime performance at Carnegie Hall in March 2026.

REPORTS

School LAND Trust Training
The Board of Education completed its annual training on the School LAND Trust Program, reviewing the purpose of trust funds, board member responsibilities, and supporting student achievement through school-based planning.

Construction Update
The board received an update on construction activity and the district’s athletic field projects, including timelines, current progress, and anticipated next steps for ongoing and future improvements. To stay up to date on these projects, please visit our website.
 

DISCUSSIONS

District Reconfiguration and Long-Term School Closures
The board discussed three district recommendations:
  • formally closing Washington Elementary’s 4th–6th grade Magnet program at the end of the current school year,
  • reconfiguring Nibley Park School as a K–6 school starting next school year, and
  • closing Innovations Early College High School at the end of the current school year.
The board voted to move all three items to the action agenda.

Strategic Plan Revisions
The board reviewed proposed revisions to the Strategic Plan for Student Achievement, focusing on updated goals, performance measures, and alignment with district priorities. This item was moved to the action agenda.

Board Policy and Administrative Procedures for G-30
The board considered a proposed new policy, Policy G-30: Public Education Hotline and Reporting, along with its administrative procedures. This policy was created in response to recent state board requirements. Board members discussed how the process would function and how reports and complaints would be addressed and tracked. This item was moved to the action agenda.

Student Board Member Process
The board reviewed an updated process for selecting student board members, including proposed revisions to Policy B-1: Board of Education Legal Status, Responsibilities, and Ethics and new procedures for student applications, interviews, and appointments. The board voted to move this item to the action agenda.

Board Policy B-2
The board examined proposed updates to Policy B-2: School Board Meetings, clarifying how the board would receive and potentially discuss information about safe school violations. This item was moved to the action agenda.
 

ACTION

  • The board voted to close the 4th–6th grade Magnet program at Washington Elementary at the end of this school year.
  • The board voted to reconfigure Nibley Park School as a K–6 school, starting in the 2026–27 school year.
  • The board voted to close Innovations Early College High School at the end of the 2025–26 school year. The board also directed the superintendent and district staff to work with the Innovations School Collaboration Team and the School Community Council to determine student placement within an existing comprehensive district high school, prioritizing continuity for students, as possible.
  • The board approved revisions to the Strategic Plan for Student Achievement.
  • The board approved the new Policy G-20: Public Education Hotline and Reporting and its administrative procedures.
  • The board approved revisions to the application, interview, and selection process for student board members. The board will now select two student board members each year, each from a different school.
  • The board approved updates to Policy B-2: School Board Meetings.
